US observation of Kim Jong Un at risk after surgery, The US is monitoring intelligence that indicates North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong Un, is in serious risk after undergoing a previous surgery, according to a US official with direct knowledge.
A second source familiar with the intelligence had told CNN that the US was closely tracking Kim’s security updates.
Kim recently missed his grandfather’s April 15 birthday party, sparking concerns about his health. Four days prior to that he had been seen at a government meeting.
Another US official told CNN Monday that Kim’s health issues are plausible but it’s hard to determine the extent.
Daily NK, a South Korean-based online newspaper that focuses on North Korea, notes that on April 12, Kim was reportedly given a cardiovascular system procedure.
According to the news website, Kim underwent the cardiovascular system procedure due to “excessive smoking, obesity and overwork,” and is now undergoing treatment at a villa in Hyangsan County following his operation.

A South Korean source told CNN Monday that top leaders in the country are well aware of reports on Kim’s health status but can’t independently verify details provided by Daily NK. In a statement issued to reporters, South Korea’s Presidential Blue House said they had nothing to comment on Kim’s health reports and that “no suspicious signs” were found inside North Korea.
South Korea’s Ministry of Unification and Defense gave a “no comm.”
The National Security Council and the National Intelligence Director’s office refused to comment when CNN approached Monday. CNN has asked the CIA and the department of state for comment.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials contacted North Korean experts — especially those who studied the Kim regime — to talk about contingency planning, a third source familiar with the communications informed CNN.
Nevertheless, the situation remains turbid because it is extremely difficult to collect information out of North Korea — one of the most daunting US information targets.
North Korea controls closely all details about its dictator, who is regarded within the nation almost like a god. His absences from official state-owned media also spark speculation and health rumors. North Korea doesn’t have a free press and is often a black hole when it comes to leading the world. “There have been a number of recent reports about Kim’s health (smoking, heart, and brain), and if Kim is hospitalized it will clarify why he wasn’t present at the big April 15th celebrations,” said Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former CIA deputy head of North Korea’s division. “However, there have been a lot of false health reports over the years about Kim Jong-un or his family.We’re going to have to wait and see.
Kim Jong Il’s absence from a parade celebrating the 60th anniversary of North Korea in 2008 was followed by rumors that he was in poor health. It was later revealed that he had a stroke, after which his health continued to decline until his death in 2011. Kim Jong Un disappeared from the public eye for more than a month in 2014, which led to speculation about his healing.
Still, with Kim’s health mounting fears, the state of US-South Korean ties has troubled US officials, sources tell CNN.
President Donald Trump said on Monday that there is a “great relationship” between the two countries but added that he wants them to pay more for the US presence in the region. The two countries had missed multiple deadlines for those negotiations. And now in-person talks are impeded because of the coronavirus pandemic.
