According to officials in the region, human clinical trials for a possible coronavirus vaccine are officially underway in UK.
UK starts trails for coronavirus vaccine,British health minister Matt Hancock said the trial would start on Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the vaccine candidate was developed by Oxford University researchers and received government funding of about $25 million. Some 510 healthy people aged between 18 and 55 are eligible to participate.
A statement says the vaccine, which researchers at the Jenner Institute and Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford initially began working on in January, is made from a weakened form of a common cold virus, or adenovirus, from chimpanzees. It’s been “genetically engineered to make it difficult for it to evolve in humans,” says a statement from Southampton University Hospital, which helps to run the experiment.
“This has been combined with genes generating proteins from the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) called spike glycoproteins, which play an important role in the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection pathway,” he added.
The vaccine candidate will not be given to anyone participating in the study; half of the participants will receive a “control” vaccine, which, according to the article, in this case is one that protects against meningitis and sepsis.
“There are currently no approved vaccines or specific therapies for COVID-19 but vaccines are the most successful way to contain outbreaks and the international community has stepped up efforts to create one,” said Saul Faust, head of the Southampton Clinical Testing Facility at Southampton University Hospital.
“This vaccine seeks to turn against it the most effective tool of the virus, its spikes – to create antibodies that bind to them, helping the immune system to lock on and kill the virus.”
While more than 70 possible coronavirus vaccines are being developed worldwide, the UK candidate for the vaccine. Is only the fourth to reach clinical trials in humans, followed by two in the United States and one in China.
