Technology will replace your wallet, Software wallet will soon substitute and ignore physical wallet, if the coronavirus epidemic ends up disappearing and we can enter society.
Before we go out to make sure we have our keys and phones all of us must go through our personal ritualistic pat-down. Perhaps what we won’t need is our wallet.
Apple, Samsung, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and several more are battling for our finances to be taken over by them.
The dystopian future they hope would finally do away with money and wallets and purses filled with plastic. A variety of applications will be in their place, such as Apple Wallet, Samsung Pay and GooglePay. For several of those companies it’s just a matter of time. 6 Years later we’re closer than ever to Apple’s dream. All major credit cards operate with digital wallets offered by Apple, Google, and Samsung. Likewise, airline tickets do. About 15 per cent of all Starbucks orders are now coming from tablets, the company said in January. Governments around the world are also slowly getting ready to sell driver’s licenses on our mobile.
And more is yet to come. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal last year, Google and Amazon are working on creating “checking account-like” goods. Google is said to be working with Citigroup and a local credit union to develop a debit card that rivals the Apple Card, while Amazon is talking to banks like JPMorgan Chase. Apple partnered with Goldman Sachs for their Apple Wallet, launched last year. In addition, Facebook is aiming to fully replace the banks with its Libra project. The digital money, which is created using Bitcoin-like crypto-currency technology, is designed to make it easier for people to store and spend money, especially those without a bank account and in poorer countries.
The simplicity of digitizing our wallets is more to many of us than just digging out the cardboard we all carry around. This offers an opportunity to wipe out paper money at a time when the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread without having to hold off a vaccine or medication. And it’s a way to stop being caught at the store once again without the right loyalty card or ID.
For many of the tech firms there is something in it too, experts claim. The more we use these programs, the more likely we can stick to managing our money with the businesses we trust. When we fly, we also leave mountains of data in our path, or pay for anything. It is going to be used by companies to decide what kind of food we want when we want to buy it, whether we are more likely to eat it out or sit at home for certain days of the week. People’s spending patterns may also show their awareness of personality, such as if we lack self-control, are more civic-minded or have health problems.
“Most businesses make money from that info,” said Dayna Ford, an analyst at Gartner covering the world of payments.
During the past, companies with credit cards will sell spending data to monitor firms and retailers and understand customer behaviour. However, technology firms know they can only obtain the data themselves if they then provide their own payments service. “They should make their gadgets smarter,” she said. They just need to persuade us to use it.
