Ramadan makes Taliban to oppose Afghan ceasefire offer

The Taliban have ignored a request from the government for a ceasefire on Ramadan in Afghanistan, saying a truce is “not moral” as it steps up attacks on government forces.

Ramadan makes Taliban to oppose Afghan ceasefire offer, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has called on the rebels to lay down their arms for the Islamic holy month that started Friday, as the country is battling the rising coronavirus pandemic.

However, spokesman for the Taliban, Suhail Shaheen, tweeted late Thursday to lambaste the government’s bid, citing continuing differences about a possible peace settlement and a postponed exchange of prisoners as reasons to continue fighting.
“It’s not fair and persuasive to call for ceasefire,” Shaheen wrote as he accused the government of endangering the lives of prisoners during the outburst.

Under a historic US-Taliban agreement signed earlier this year, the Afghan government and the taliban were now supposed to have concluded a prisoner exchange and begun negotiations to bring about a comprehensive truce The new round of bickering comes after dozens of Afghan security forces have been killed in a fresh wave of violence launched by the taliban this week.
The attacks were confined mainly to rural areas and small towns. The militants have decided not to assault towns under the US-Taliban agreement.

American and other foreign powers agreed to withdraw from Afghanistan by July 2021 after many security assurances and talks with the government were held by the Taliban.
For years Ghani has been calling for a permanent truce with the Taliban, only to be neglected by the increasingly emboldened insurgents.
Instead, the Taliban have ridiculed Ghani’s government, referring to it as foreign-controlled “puppets,” and have roundly refused to participate in peace talks as they escalate attacks on Afghan forces.
