China and Russia called on by Iran to resist a push by Washington to extend a U.N.-imposed arms embargo due to expire in October under Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with six powers.
Washington currently experiencing a devastating situation over the death of an African American citizen, George Floyd, who was brutally killed by a police officer.
The administration of United States President, Donald Trump, has taken a tougher line with the United Nations to extend and reinforce the embargo on Iran, warning that its lifting would allow Tehran to acquire weapons that could fuel Middle East conflicts.
In a televised speech Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.
“Americans are already angry, upset, and wanting to take this issue to the Security Council. We want four permanent members of the (U.N. Security) Council to stand up to America.”
“Particularly, we expect China and Russia to resist this U.S. plot. United States will not succeed and we will make our defence capabilities are increased as we have been doing so even under sanctions.”
Iranian President and its rival Saudi Arabia, a close U.S. ally, have been involved in proxy wars and political confrontations in the region for years, from Syria and Iraq to Yemen and Bahrain.
Council veto-powers China and Russia have already revealed they are against re-imposing an arms embargo on Iran.
Washington threatens to trigger a so-called snapback of all United Nations sanctions on Iran, including the arms embargo, using a process outlined in the nuclear deal, if the U.N. Security Council does not extend the embargo.
However, China and Russia, both parties to the agreement, have already begun to file the case against Washington’s assertion at the United Nations that it can cause a return of all sanctions on Iran at the Security Council.
In 2018 , the United States withdrew from the deal, arguing that it was flawed to Tehran ‘s advantage, and re-imposed sanctions that were affecting Iran ‘s economy. Under the deal, Iran has agreed to halt its delicate nuclear work in exchange for relief from sanctions.
After the United States left, Iran has slowly rolled back its obligations under the deal. The nuclear deal allows sanctions against Iran, including an arms embargo, to be returned if Tehran breaches the deal.
