Idris Elba is collaborating with the UN to establish a $40 million coronavirus relief fund

Idris Elba is collaborating with the UN to establish a $40 million coronavirus relief fund,Covid-19 survivors Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina have teamed up United Nations (UN) representatives to start up a pandemic-hit $40 million (£32 million) fund for developing countries.

The pair, who are UN Goodwill Ambassadors, have introduced the organization’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) initiative to help rural and emerging economies cope with the virus and its aftermath.

Speaking of the position of the new fund, Idris, who had recovered from Covid-19 with his wife after contracting it while filming in New Mexico last month, said that while countries need to prioritize the wellbeing of their people, the world’s poor should not be overlooked.

The developed economies of the world are right now in the middle of this pandemic and they will of course do whatever they can to protect their own people,” the 47-year-old explained. “Any death is one death too many at a time like this, but the reality is that global intervention is also a matter of self-interest. As long as the pandemic continues to escalate everywhere, it will present a danger anywhere.”

Thor star, whose parents come from Sierra Leone and Ghana, and Sabrina, who has Somali heritage, were on UN visits to Africa and worried that the global crisis might result. “IFAD needs more support to carry on the work that is so urgently needed to keep food systems running in rural areas if we are to come together out of this crisis and prevent unnecessary hunger and misery,” he said.

The IFAD bosses have received $40 million in seed money for the new fund and are hoping for a further $200 million (£160 million) in government funding.
