MILAN (Reuters) — Ferrari workers sign up for voluntary coronavirus screening so that they can return to work as soon as possible in an ambitious scheme which could serve as a model for factories eager to restart production.
As part of Ferrari’s “Back on Track” campaign, staff, families and suppliers must first take blood tests to see whether they are healthy and then download an alert to warn them if they have been in close touch with any representatives of the scheme that contract COVID-19.
As producers in Europe and North America are trying to find ways to restart their company while holding the virus off production sites, Ferrari’s scheme for monitoring staff and recording potential COVID-19 cases is being watched closely.
The aim is to ensure that only safe workers resume work, so if anyone gets the disease, the mobile app will warn their close contacts to stay away from the plant until they have been given the clearest message.
“We all acknowledged that we are not indestructible,” said Alberto Zanetti, president of the UILM union in the Modena province of northern Italy, which is home to the Maranello plant in Ferrari. “Jobs want to get tested.” Ferrari said 500 out of 4,000 employees had already taken tests at their Italian plants in Maranello and Modena and the company had the capacity to do around 800 a day.
“This screening will allow us to take an initial picture of the health status of the population of the business being tested,” said Michele Antoniazzi, head of human resources at Ferrari, adding that almost everyone offered a test had agreed to have one.
The blood tests indicate whether an employee is healthy or may be contaminated. In the second example, a swab test is then needed to confirm that they actually have COVID-19.
Ferrari will also provide adequate insurance benefits in the program for successful monitoring of those injured and will provide temporary accommodation and medical care for anyone who wishes to isolate themselves. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s plants will continue to be shut down along with other Italian companies that are deemed non-essential. Yet the carmaker says that his scheme carefully constructed with virologists will help to provide a healthy working atmosphere as soon as restrictions are removed.
